糖尿病在老年動物中非常常見，如果及早發現並加上適當的護理和主人的配合，包括密切的監測、治療、飲食等，患有糖尿病的動物也可以過上幸福長壽的生活。然而，想要好好控制糖尿病，實在受多個方面和元素所影響，作為獸醫護士，我們絕對需要對糖尿病有深刻的了解，並有能力跟主人解釋每一項藥物和家居護理，錯一、漏一不可。由於糖尿病是一樣複雜性的疾病，一旦控制不好，甚至乎可以導致酮酸中毒，令整個病情更加複雜，是次課程也會為大家講解糖尿酮酸中毒及醫院護理。

Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine disease in dogs and cats (1 of every 300 patients). It is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate metabolism due to relative or absolute insulin deficiency. Up to 25% of diabetic patients are euthanised on day 1 of diagnosis for reasons that can often be mitigated with education about diabetes and the goals of therapy. Therefore, successful treatment of diabetes depends on excellent client communication and education delivered by veterinary staff.
Animals with diabetes mellitus are susceptible to the serious metabolic disease known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Vet nurses are crucial to controlling and caring for patients with this potentially fatal illness. Nurses should be aware of the underlying causes of this condition and identify its clinical symptoms and assess how well a patient responds to treatment.
